Risk-Driven System Design
The System Design Proposal, previously referred to as the Specification, is founded on a comprehensive Risk Assessment. Unlike the previous British Standards, the new EN standards mandate system designs to be rooted in risk.
Classification of Systems and Equipment
Intruder alarm systems are categorised (1-4) according to the EN standard. The classification is determined by factors such as the risk level of the premises, the risk level to occupants, the value of contents, and the presumed knowledge intruders might possess.
- Grade 1: Low-risk system with restricted intruder knowledge and access to basic tools.
- Grade 2: Low to medium-risk system where intruders have limited familiarity with alarm systems.
- Grade 3: Medium to high-risk system designed for intruders knowledgeable about alarm systems.

Equipment is evaluated based on the level of protection it offers, with Grade 1 providing the foundational security level. Control Panels offer more comprehensive event recording and memory capabilities. Standby battery power is now mandatory for a minimum of twelve hours.
